HURLING

The junior hurlers narrowly got the better of Kilmacow by a single point in the second round of the JJ Kavanagh Junior Championship on Saturday last in Danesfort. Playing with the aid of a stiff breeze in the opening half, Conahy led by 0-12 to 0-5 at half-time. However, Kilmacow came storming back in the second half and took the lead with two well taken goals. Conahy regained their composure in the final minutes and substitute Harry O’Mahony was able to score the winning point to secure a Conahy victory by 0-18 to 2-11. The locals will now face Piltown in the championship quarter-final this Saturday afternoon at 12.00 in Danesfort.

The minor hurlers were also in action against Kilmacow in their latest game in the Kilkenny Vehicle Centre Roinn B League/Championship in Kilmacow. In what was an excellent game between two very even teams, Conahy emerged victorious on a 2-18 to 1-19 score line, with the Conahy goals coming from Jack Buggy and Darragh Horgan.

The under-14 boys played host to Danesfort in Jenkinstown in the Duggan Steel Roinn D League on Friday last. Though the visitors were the better side in the end and deserved winners, huge credit should go to the young Conahy team for an excellent effort all through.

The intermediate camogie girls produced a fine performance to defeat Rower-Inistioge in the opening round of the Abbott Intermediate championship on Sunday morning last in Thomastown. It was a close game in the opening half with the sides level at 0-8 apiece at the break. However, two second half goals from full-forward Amy Brennan were the key scores as Conahy advanced to victory on a 2-15 to 1-11 score line. Best wishes also go to Conahy defender Aisling Maher who suffered a severe injury during the game. At the time of writing, the locals have yet to know their quarter-final opponents, but they expect to be back in action soon.

The under-16 girls were narrowly defeated by Clara in a thrilling semi-final in the St. Canice’s CU Roinn D Championship in Jenkinstown on Saturday evening last. Conahy led by 3-4 to 2-4 at half-time and still led by a goal coming into the final minutes, but Clara finished strongly scoring 1-2 without reply to win out by 6-8 to 6-6. Hard luck to the Conahy girls, who battled so bravely until the end. The under-14 girls scored an excellent win over Piltown in the St. Canice’s CU Roinn D quarter-final on Thursday evening last in Jenkinstown. Conahy were solid all throughout the field and won out by 4-5 to 3-3. They will now travel away to Kilmacow for the semi-final this Saturday morning at 11.00 a.m. Best of luck to all involved.
