HURLING

The junior hurlers scored a great victory over Piltown in the JJ Kavanagh & Sons Championship quarter-final on Saturday last in Tullaroan. It took extra time to separate the two teams, after they finished level at the end of normal time. A Piltown goal at the stroke of full time saw them snatch a draw, with the score 1-17 to Conahy’s 0-20. The locals were the stronger team during extra time, outscoring Piltown 1-6 to 0-2 during the time. The key score came in the final minute when Jack Rhatigan broke through to finish to the Piltown net, giving Conahy a 1-26 to 1-19 win. The locals will now face John Lockes in the county semi-final on the weekend after next, likely to take place in UPMC Nowlan Park.

The minor hurlers faced Emeralds in the opening round of the Kilkenny Motor Centre Roinn B Championship in Castlecomer on Sunday last. Conahy led by a single point, 0-9 to 0-8 at the half time break. It was nip and tuck all the way in the second half but Conahy managed to hold on for a 0-18 to 0-15 victory.

The under-14 boys played two matches in the past week, firstly taking on Dicksboro in the final round of the Duggan Steel Roinn D League, and then facing James Stephens in the opening round of the Roinn D championship on Sunday last in Larchfield. Though they were defeated in both games, the young Conahy side battled hard all the way and there were some very good individual performances. Well done to all the boys after a busy year of matches.

CAMOGIE

The intermediate camogie girls played host to St. Lachtain’s in the Abbott Intermediate championship quarter-final in Jenkinstown on Sunday last, and were defeated in heartbreaking fashion after a penalty shootout. The sides were level at 1-9 apiece at the end of normal time, with the Conahy goal coming from Molly O’Dornan. They remained level at 1-13 apiece at the end of extra-time, and unfortunately for Conahy, the Freshford girls proved to be more successful from their penalty shots, and advanced to the county semi-finals. Hard luck to all involved, and to the management team of John Carroll, Eoin Murphy, Shane Mulhall and Gemma Bergin.

The under-14 girls travelled away to Kilmacow for a St. Canice’s CU Roinn D semi-final on Saturday morning last, but unfortunately the home side proved the stronger in the end, winning by 6-5 to 2-5. Well done to all the girls on a great effort throughout the year.
